Massive Data Breach at Duolingo: Over 2.6 Million Accounts Affected
Cybercriminals have successfully compromised the security of the language learning application Duolingo, thereby exposing the personal data of over 2.6 million users.
Duolingo, a popular mobile application dedicated to foreign language education for over a decade, is now at the center of a major controversy following the leak of sensitive data. Over 2.6 million accounts were discovered being sold on specialized forums for the price of 2 euros each.
This leak jeopardizes various personal information, including users' names, first names, email addresses, and other confidential details. According to cybersecurity experts, this data had already been put up for sale during a previous attempt earlier this year.
It turns out that the vulnerability exploited to carry out this hack had been in existence for... a year already. The victims' data was extracted using a technique called "scraping," which involves extracting information from a website using automated scripts.
In addition to its role in language learning, Duolingo is fueling other projects, including the upcoming launch of a music-focused application. Clues regarding this music initiative were recently discovered within the application itself, and the official announcement will likely take place during the company's annual conference, Duocon, scheduled for October 11th.
